Frequently Asked Questions

In Touch Massage Therapy, Westerly RIMassage Brings Overall Wellbeing

Thank you for considering In Touch Massage Therapy for your massage experience. Whether this is your first or fiftieth massage, we just wanted to answer some frequently asked questions for you.

Many people see massage as a luxury. Do you see getting your oil changed in your car as a luxury? No…so why think that taking care of your body is a luxury? Massage should not be thought of as a luxury expense. Think of it as preventative pleasure.

What should I do to prepare for my appointment for Massage Therapy?

Please complete our Confidential Health History Questionnaire prior to your visit so we can properly prepare for your appoinment.

What are the benefits of Massage Therapy?

One of the first things we will want to know is “why are you here?”. Massage Therapy is beneficial in the following ways:

  • General Relaxation
  • Stress and Anxiety Reduction
  • Decreased Blood Pressure
  • Improves sleep
  • Relieves Headaches
  • Improves Circulation
  • Improves Immune System
  • Increased recovery from an injury
  • Reduces spasm and cramping
  • Enhances overall wellbeing
  • Complement to Other Health Care

What should I consider with regard to my session of Massage Therapy?

Discuss with your Massage Therapist any and all concerns you may have about your session. It is very important that you are comfortable during the massage, and that you know you have options. Here are some commonly expressed concerns:

Modesty
In a standard massage session, you will be draped with a sheet and blanket (from neck to feet). You may choose to be totally or partially unclothed under the drape. Many people prefer to wear their underpants during the session. You are completely draped at all times except the body part that is being massaged. Genitals and women’s breasts will be covered at all times. Feel free to ask about the draping method to be used, and let the massage therapist know what you are comfortable with.

Talking
Talking during a massage is optional. Some people prefer silence, especially during a relaxation massage, while other clients are more sociable. If you wish to be sociable during your massage, we ask that you do it quietly. Always feel free to give the therapist feedback at anytime during the massage. The massage therapist can not always pick up on cues that the pressure is too much or not enough. Please speak up about pressure; we want this to be a pleasurable experience. We may request feedback from you, especially when addressing a specific problem.

Pain
Whether you will feel any pain during the massage depends on several factors:

  • Your physical condition
  • The reason for your massage
  • Your pain tolerance
  • The therapist’s technique
Please give feedback if the pain is too much for you, and we will make adjustments accordingly. Tense muscles are often sore, and may hurt a little when massaged. You may experience delayed soreness after your massage. Take a hot shower or bath, and drink plenty of water to help remove waste products flushed out during the massage. The more you receive massage, the less likely you will experience post-massage soreness.

Are there any health restrictions?

Yes. If you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, recent surgery or fractures, phlebitis, fever and other conditions, many doctors don’t recommend receiving massage. In some cases, massage may be done with some restrictions, while with others, massage should be avoided altogether. If in doubt, consult your doctor.

Do you accept Insurance (i.e. medical, automotive medical claims, workers compensation)?

Provided proper documentation is received by In Touch Massage Therapy, insurance billing is permitted. Please contact Michelle Barber for further information and details.

What health information should I provide?

It is very important, that you include any major health problems you have, medications you are taking, allergies, state of pregnancy, and recent accidents or injuries. We may ask you more questions if a specific health problem is being addressed than for a general massage session. Please update us at every session if you have any changes in your health.

What forms of payment are accepted?

We recommend that you discuss financial matters before the session to avoid any misunderstandings. Payment is due after the session. Method of payment varies. We accept cash and check. Please inquire about insurance, we may accept on a case-by-case basis, provided proper documentation is provided.

How is tipping handled?

Tipping is optional. If you do not feel comfortable handing your tip over in person, please feel free to leave it on the table.

What is your policy regarding missed appointments?

We have a 24 hour notice policy. You will be asked to sign a cancellation policy and will be charged for any missed appointments.
